Today I experienced another first. One more thing to cross of the list of things I never thought I would do.
Today I killed a chicken.
On purpose.
And yes, my host brother took video so I have proof. Which is good because most of my host family wasn’t home when it happened and none of them believed me when I told them.
This was something I have been wanting to do for a while now. I thought as someone who eats meat regularly it would be good for me to understand the full process of how a chicken goes from clucking around the yard driving me crazy to resting silently on my plate, deliciously fried next to a bed of rice. So I did it. I’ll spare you the details, and those of you who are still curious can ask me more later. Suffice it to say that I tried to make it as quick and painless as I could, and yes, I did apologize to the chicken as we went and when it was over. I’m also impressed with myself for being able to eat said chicken for lunch, save for a little piece of the wing that brought back memories of the earlier plucking of feathers.
Sorry, vegetarian friends.
